Marathon Petroleum Corporation, owners of Speedway convenience stores and the St. Paul Park Marathon Refinery, is the ninth largest oil company in the world according to Investopedia. com as of September of 2020. In 2019, Marathon Petroleum’s revenue was $123,949,000,000. That is $123.949 BILLION, which is a 28.44% increase from 2018 and they had a gross profit of 13.706 billion in 2019, according to macrotrends. net. Wikipedia states they employed just over 60,000 people for 2019. Currently, Marathon Petroleum owns 16 different refineries around the US, including the refinery in St. Paul Park. The St. Paul Park Refinery is responsible for roughly 98,000 barrels per calendar day, which puts them as the tenth most productive refinery for Marathon and means they are responsible for roughly 3.4% of Marathon’s total daily oil production.
Marathon has been in contract negotiations with the Local Teamsters Union 120 since early December. The primary concern for the union is safety, a very consistent message across the board, regardless of who you talk to.
“It’s safety driven, you know, it’s like you need to be able to respond to certain things, and if you double your workload it’s probably just not possible. Safety is 100% of the reason that we’re in there,” said Chief Union Steward Dean Benson.
