The power of supporting local

A few weeks back, we at the Journal did a subscription drive, but not a normal one. We asked for people to subscribe to our local paper not to support us, but to support the community, more specifically, the United Way of Hastings Food4Kids program.

Food4Kids, led by Amy Schaffer, can take three dollars, make one bag of food and provide food for one child for an entire weekend. Last year, they distributed over 6,000 bags of food to kids, that is over $18,000 spent locally in our grocery stores to feed local kids. That cycle is huge for our community.

Our subscription drive was simple, we charge $30 for one year or $50 for two years of the Hastings Journal. Anyone that subscribed in a five-day period would get the subscription and we donated the entire amount paid to the Food4Kids program. Friday September 10, we paid a visit to the UWH office to deliver the check for over $500.

There are so many wonderful groups in town that help all over, the United Way is one of those local groups. If you would like to give on your own, visit www.unitedwayofhastings. org or find another local charity that you would like to support. Together, we build a better community!
