Thunderbolts struck down in the seventh

Visiting South Suburban pushed across five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 12-9 win in adapted softball over the South Washingron County Thunderbolts in the final home game of the regular season Monday at Woodbury.

It was tight game throughout. South Suburban took an early 3-1 lead, but the Thunderbolts rallied to go up 5-3 in the fourth inning. The two teams were tied 6-all in the fifth but South Washington took an 8-7 lead in the sixth only to watch as the visitors erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh.

“Tough one today,” said Thunderbolts head coach Jeff Figlmiller. “We’ve had that twice now with these guys. We’ve gotten the lead; we can get through five innings and after that six and seven seem to be killing us. We’ve played them twice and both times we’ve had the lead until the end and then we just don’t hold on.

“We started out 2-0, we played some non-conference games, those were good, and then we played some conference games, one of them being against South Suburban and then we went and played Dakota United which was the state champions last season and ended up beating them and that’s out only win in conference. And the rest we’ve lost, weird. Weird how it all works.” We’ve just got to get a game where we can play the whole way through.”

After opening the season with impressive wins of 20-7 and 25-2, the Thunderbolts have been on the receiving end of some lopsided scores, including losing two games to Lakeville/Burnsville/Farmington by scored of 16-5 and then 14-4 on April 22.

The Thunderbolts (1-4, 3-4) wrap up the regular season Wednesday with a game at CI Southeast leaders Dakota United (3-2, 4-2). South Washington defeated Dakota United 12-8 in the first meeting between the two teams this spring.
