Thunderbolts take state consolation crown

Thunderbolts star Logan Curtis and the South Washington Country Thunderbolts as a team saved the best for last in the state adapted hockey CI tournament.

Curtis slammed in a career high nine goals to lead the Thunderbolts to the consolation championship Saturday afternoon.

“That actually is my best, I’ve never gotten nine goals in one game,” said Curtis. “The offense helped me out.”

“Logan, very good,” said Thunderbolts head coach Jeff Figlmiller. “Very good team leader, senior. Shots were on this last game which was really good. Last night we were struggling with that a little bit.”

The Thunderbolts also got strong defensive play, led by ninth grade goalie Asher Lange.

“We did well at defense and offense and I think we did well at everything,” said Lange. “I’m feeling good.”

After a lackluster tournament opener, a surprising 10-4 loss to Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville in the quarterfinals Friday, the Thunderbolts came to life on Saturday.

“We had more people stepping up instead of relying on a few people to think they can win the game,” said Curtis.

“Really quick start,” said Figlmiller. “I think that’s the key with our team right now. Fast start, confidence builder, energy is more built up.”

South Washington scored a 7-3 win over Stillwater/Mahtomedi Saturday morning.

The Thunderbirds then rolled in the consolation finals, dominating Shakopee-Prior Lake 13-3 to take the consolation championship. South Washington finished 11-2 on the season.

“I play good defense, I shot good on offense and then I did outside and then I pass Logan, assist to, assist to Jordan and Logan on offense,” said Park senior Kalabe Tobe. “And then I shot good. I did outside and then I tun here and then I shot good.”

“Just a lot more energy today, a lot more energy,” said Thunderbolts head coach Jeff Figlmiller. “The (Saturday) games were played really well. I think the energy was really the difference. Friday night I don’t know if they came off games in school, but we didn’t have the energy. And we had the energy today and we were back to where we were. Sometimes it works that way with tournaments. Funny things happen at the tournament. They had fun. We ended well. I’m going to lose nine seniors, and we’re going to be doing some rebuilding and helping the ones who are already here get better and ti will be a good year.”

CI Southeast conference rival South Suburban won the state tournament title with an 11-2 victory over Mankato. The Thunderbolts split two games with South Suburban this season, losing the opener 11-5 then winning the second game 10-0.

The Thunderbolts opening loss to Burnsville was surprising since in the two regular season meetings between the two teams on Dec. 17, the Thunderbolts had scored 9-8 and 11-5 victories.
