Above, an 1855 public survey land map showing Belanger Island and the surrounding area prior to the Lock and Dam System raising water levels. Grey Cloud Island is on the left (as Sections 31, 32, 5 and 6), Freeborn Island to the right (Section 34). Freeborn Island is now submerged beneath Pool 2, along with large parts of Grey Cloud and Belanger Island. A backwater mine is currently proposed for that portion of the old north riverbank labeled as Sections 5 and 6, the old river course still traceable by tree lines at water level.
