Well, it was Woodbury, and it was a win, but it wasn’t the prettiest softball game you’ve ever seen.
Ninth-ranked Park downed visiting Woodbury 10-6 in Suburban East Conference softball at home Monday, bouncing back in a way from a tough loss to second-ranked Forest Lake on Friday.
Park led throughout but the Royals made it interesting with four runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.
“We always like to play Woodbury, and we jumped out to a big lead, but we’ve got to find a way to finish out games,” said head coach Tony Young. “We’ve got to find a way to finish games. That’s something, that, it’s not bothering me there, but it’s lingering.
“With Forest Lake we had every opportunity in the world to win that game,” Young continued. “It was exciting. There were defensive plays made on both sides that were great plays that kept teams off the board, and we went to the ninth inning with them and just a hit away, a timely hit away.”
Senior Alayna Adamez had a big day at the plate Monday with two singles and a home run and scored three runs.
“We can’t let them hang around,” said Park starting pitcher Ava Youngquist. “This is a team we should put away, hopefully in less than seven innings. I feel we started strong and had a lot of momentum and then by the end we kind of got comfortable and I feel we can’t get comfortable. We’ve got to keep the foot on the gas the whole time.”
“The Forest Lake game I think we were doing good, strong, it was great. We had some good hits and we fell short,” said Brink Kennedy who also had three singles and a double against the Royals. “This game I feel we came out and we had some more hits obviously than the last game. It was getting close but in the end we got the win.”
The Wolfpack went to 4-2 in the SEC (third in the conference) and 5-2 on the season. Woodbury slipped to 3-4 in the SEC and 5-5 overall.
Park has a rugged schedule in the next week, playing at Stillwater (4-2, 5-2) Wednesday, hosting East Ridge (2-4, 3-4) Friday, plays Spring Lake Park (7-5) and Hill-Murray (4-3) on Saturday at Spring Lake Park, then hosting White Bear Lake (4-2, 5-2) on Monday.
Forest Lake 8, Park 4
In an early Suburban East Conference showdown, top-ranked and undefeated Forest Lake took a marathon ninth-inning 8-4 decision from 10th-ranked Park on a chilly Friday afternoon in Cottage Grove.
The Rangers improved to 6-0 in the conference and 9-0 on the season. Park fell to 3-2 in the SEC and 4-2 overall.
Park 9, Roseville 0
The visiting Wolfpack had another comfortable Suburban East Conference win Wednesday, topping host Roseville at Anpetu Teca 9-0. It was Park’s third lopsided win in four conference games.
The win set up an early season showdown game between the two conference leaders, Park and Forest Lake.
