Park went 2-3 Friday and Saturday in the 15-team Panther Challenge at Spring Lake Park.

The Wolfpack were 0-2 Friday, losing to Andover (14-25. 12-25) and Wayzata (20-25, 17-25), then bounced back with a 2-1 day on Saturday, beating Fridley (25-21, 12-25, 15-13) and St. Paul Johnson (25-15, 18-25, 16-14) before losing the finale to Minneapolis Southside (18-25, 20-25).

Park, now 10-11 on the season, hosts Irondale (1-3, 2-13-1) Thursday, then plays at league-leading Mounds View (4-0, 10-5) Tuesday. Mounds View topped Park 25-11, 25-21 in the Eastview Big Bolt Classic earlier this season.

East Ridge 3, Park 2

This was about as close and intense as volleyball gets.

Visiting East Ridge and Park hooked up in a marathon match Thursday before a raucous crowd who loudly cheered on both teams.

The Raptors eventually prevailed in five tight sets, winning 25-21, 26-24, 22-25, 21-25 and 19-17, In all, just 12 points separated the two teams in the match.

East Ridge jumped out to a two-set lead and seemed cruising for a sweep, but the Wolfpack battled back to take games three and four. The fifth set was another nail bitter. The two teams were tied at least seven times at 7, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17-all -- before the Raptors scored the final two points.

“Good match, lots to learn from it though,” said Park head coach Robert Lozinski-McLean. “We had some peak performances I would say in the third and fourth sets where I think everything was moving along for us well, passing, setting, deciding which route to run. I think all of that went well for us. We saw glimpses of it.

“Now I need to get them to – when we have that momentum on our side of the net – to run with it, and those are the fixes we’re going to take back into the gym,” Lozinski-McLean continued. “You know no one likes to lose. I’m a very competitive person. I’ve been playing volleyball my whole life and its sucks to lose but at the end of the day I said to them there’s things we can take from this and learn. There’s things that are going to push us to do better next time and it’s a good learning moment.”

Park slipped to 2-2 in the Suburban East Conference and 8-9 on the season. East Ridge improved its record to 3-1 in the SEC and 5-1 overall.
