The visiting Apple Valley Eagles were playing downhill almost all of the match while the host Park Wolfpack were forced to battle uphill in the girls' volleyball season opener for both teams Tuesday.

Apple Valley scored a decisive 26-9, 25-11 and 25-5 sweep of the Wolfpack.

With just one starter returning – and mostly a cast of new faces to the varsity -- from last year’s 24-4 team, Park had trouble both defending and scoring Tuesday. Serve receive was shaky for the young Wolfpack Tuesday and a lack of height along the front line allowed the Eagles to soar above the action most of the match.

Sill there were some positive signs for the young Wolfpack.

“Our serve receive has been struggling the last few days, even in practice” said head coach Amy Johnson. “So, I knew that if the serve receive was not going to clean up hat it was maybe be a quick night tonight, unfortunately. We’re young and we’re learning. And I keep telling the girls take every opportunity, no matter what the scoreboard says. Like not even worry about that. Let’s worry about making sure that we are constantly improving, working together as a team and just having fun.

“Just that we know that they can do it,” Johnson continued. “We have full confidence that these girls can go out there and serve receive. They have to kind of get the transfer from what they do in practice and now transferring it to the game. And that will come with experience. It will come.”

Park hosts St. Paul Central (1-1) Tuesday, Sept. 9.
