Park went 1-3 in the Big Bolt Classic boys volleyball tournament Friday and Saturday at Eastview High in Apple Valley.
Park opened the tournament Friday with a 0-2 loss to Bloomington Jefferson (12-25, 20-25), then topped St. Paul Harding 2-1 (21-25, 25-16, 15-12) in the second match. The Wolfpack however were 0-2 on Saturday, losing 2-0 to Andover (17-25, 24-26) and to Mounds View (11-25, 21-25).
Park is now 2-0 in the Suburban East Conference and 8-6 on the season. The Wolfpack host East Ridge (3-1, 1-1) Thursday then play at Cretin-Derham Hall (1-6, 0-2) on Tuesday
Park 3, Roseville 2
The Wolfpack went the distance for the first time this season and took a close-as-they come five-set match from visiting Roseville Thursday in Suburban East Conference boys volleyball.
Park won in five sets, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-9. The five-set match was decided by a total of 16 points.
“Five sets, really close sets, all five of them honestly so I’m really excited that we pulled that win out,” said senior Davion Nguyen. “I think we set better than they did. I think we spread the ball out more than they did. They kind of liked the right side a little too much and he was letting that pressure get to him and he was hitting it out way too much. But I think we did a good job of spreading the ball.
“I didn’t know what was going to be out first five-set match, which team that would be with but honestly I’m glad it happened earlier in the season, so the boys have a good understanding of what that feels like,” said Park head coach Robert Lozinski McLean. “And exciting, exciting match.
“What I thought we did well was even being down at one point one of our sets we were down by six points and we came back and had a 9-1 run to win he set,” Lozinski-McLean added. “To me that’s big. That tells me my team has grit, determination, they are – no matter what the score – ready to fight and I like that about them. The fifth set we looked really good. We came out swinging; we came out hot. I think we caught Roseville off guard with how aggressive we were and the score showed it.”
Park improved to 2-0 in the conference and 7-4 on the season. It was only the second loss of the season for a good Roseville team, which fell to 1-1 and 9-2.
“Definitely sometimes serving,” said junior Sylas Lee when asked what the Wolfpack could have done better. “We kind of served out, including me, myself. There’s definitely a lot of work to be needed but we’ve just got to keep working hard.”
Park 3, Woodbury 0
Park opened the Suburban East Conference season with a satisfying sweep of rival Woodbury Tuesday, winning on the Royals home court 25-18, 25-13 and 25-21.
