Park had a mixed bag in boys' volleyball last week, sweeping visiting Cretin-Derham Hall on April 29, then being swept at Irondale on Thursday.
Irondale won 25-21, 25-12 and 25-18.
The split left Park 4-2 in the Suburban East Conference and 10-14 on the season.
Against visiting Cretin, Park won 25-17, 27-25 and 25-18.
“I think we just came together as a team and we got hyped together and that just helped build energy and we were just there to play,” said Park senior Gavin Oberding. “I think we just keep learning from our mistakes and just always try and get better. I think we had a really strong offense; we just lacked defense at times.”
Park got a bit sloppy in the second game, but it was still a solid win for the Wolfpack Tuesday as they swept visiting Cretin-Derham Hall in three games.
“I think we did well hitting the ball and getting the ball over, even though sometimes it wasn’t like a really good swing, we still got the ball over and consistency is all that matters,” said senior Mason Vang.
Asked what the Wolfpack did not do well, Vang said, “Definitely passing and hustle. We were definitely standing up and on our heels a lot, so we’ve definitely got to fix our energy and discipline to stay low.”
Cretin remained winless in the SEC at 0-5 and 0-6 on the season.
“Tonight, we just wanted to have a little fun, play with some energy,” said Park head coach Robert Lozinski-McLean. “I thought we did that in set one. I thought we executed our individual skills well, so serve receive, defense, blocking, hitting, serving, I think we were truly just executing each individual role well. And that’s what my expectation was.
“There was a glimpse of maybe laziness in set two and then we picked it back up in set three,” Lozinski-McLean added. “Now in terms of tonight, set two, I would hope not to see that laziness as we’re this far into the season so definitely some hiccups to work out still and making sure we’re always prepped and ready, energy is out there, communication is going. But for the most part what we’re seeing is where we need to be this far into the season.”
Park plays at Stillwater (1-5, 1-7) in the last road game of the regular season Thursday. Then hosts White Bear Lake (2-5, 2-7) on Tuesday, May 13, in the final home game of the regular season.
