Volleyball team wins thriller in home opener

Coming into their first official home game ever, the Park Wolfpack boys' volleyball team was struggling. Park had dropped road games at Apple Valley and at Rosemount then went 0-4 in a tournament at Osseo.

But the home court magic was with the Wolfpack Tuesday as the team scored a dramatic five-set victory over visiting Lakeville South. It was Park’s best game of the season, agreed head coach Robert Lozinski-McLean

Park won 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 18-25 and 15-13.

“Tonight, we set a lot of pressure on cleaning up our serve receive, and our defense and I think that played pretty well tonight,” said Lozinski-McLean. “Something I think we maybe struggled a little bit with was maybe sealing our block. But we’ll keep pushing on that in practice and we’ll get better at it.

“Pushing this to five sets was good for us,” Lozinski-McLean added. “That even when we’re down we can come back and win. It takes some diligence and some grit to claw back in it, but we were able to do it.”

Park did a lot of things right in the game -- passing, hitting and defense. Both teams struggled with serving at times.

“What we did really well, I think we got the pass up, good pass, and our setters put the ball where they needed to put it,” said Park junior Davion Nguyen. “Winning today definitely boosts the team’s morale.”

“I think we spiked smart, we spiked it into the right place, we played our game, we communicated, we faced our mistakes and we were together as a team,” said Lucas Siong.

Park 3, Minneapolis Camden 1

Park made it two wins in a row with a narrow 3-1 victory at Minneapolis Camdem Thursday. The Wolfpack won 25-12, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-23. After winning easily in the first game, the next three all came down to the win.

The Wolfpack improved to 3-6 overall on the season.

Park plays at Roseville Thursday, then hosts Forest Lake on Tuesday, April 22.
