With Smith out, gymnastics team falls to East Ridge

Competing without top gymnast Leah Smith, the host Park Wolfpack still turned in a credible performance Thursday against the East Ridge Raptors.

East Ridge won the meet with one of its better scores of the season, outscoring Park 137.900 to 131.850.

Smith broke a toe in practice last Thursday and is expected to miss three weeks. The hope is she’ll be able to return for the end-of-the season section meet Feb. 11.

“So we’re praying for a healed toe,” said Park head coach Ali Flaata.

Flaata said the Wolfpack were focused on improving their beam routines and accomplished that Thursday.

“We definitely improved on beam, that was our goal for this week, we kind of had a rough beam on Saturday,” said Flaata. “We had five girls stick out of our eight competing, so that was a good improvement.”

“We had some more falls than usual, but with Leah still out with her broken toe. They did pretty well without her,” Flaata added.

Emily Dahlstrom led Park with a third-place finish in the all-around, scoring a 33.175. Rainna Jameson was fourth in the all-around with a score of 32.825 and teammate Natalya Rugel fifth at 32.825.

Kacie Diaz was second on the beam in her only varsity event with a score of 8.600.
