Wolfpack boys fall to Woodbury

It was rinse, lather and repeat for the Park High Wolfpack Friday night as the team dropped a frustrating 65-36 decision to Woodbury before a large and raucous home court crowd.

Park started off well enough, leading 13-9 with 8:20 to play in the first half but then things slowly fell apart and never really got better the rest of the way for the Wolfpack. Woodbury went from down four to a 23-18 lead, outscoring Park 14-5 over a key five-minute stretch and taking a 28-19 at the half.

The second half was more of the same for both teams as the shots just wouldn’t drop for the Wolfpack. Woodbury went up 38-21 with 13:31 to play, led 45-26 with 8:35 left, 55-30 with 4:20 to go and eventually won after intermission by a 37-17 court.

Park coaches tried a variety of lineups to stop the bleeding, but none clicked.

“I thought in the first half we turned them over 13 times, we had multiple transition opportunities we didn’t score in, we didn’t even get a shot off in, ” said Park head coach Isaiah Wallfred. “We continued to defend. We couldn’t shoot it. We shot 3 of 22 from three tonight. And so we were right there. We had a six-point lead early and then we didn’t score for seven minutes. And the thing is they were good shots. They were shots that we take and that we make.

“And it just sort of wore on us I think,” Wallfred continued. “Then we came out in the second half and we didn’t have it. We didn’t defend; we didn’t turn them over. Had to eventually to go play a zone, mix up multiple different zones just to contain them. They just played way harder than us. They wanted it more than us. They were more competitive than us. That’s it.”

It was Park’s eighth straight loss since a Dec. 23 win at Centennial and sixth straight loss at home.

“We’ve got to be mentally tougher,” Wallfred added. “We can’t let missing shots affect our defense. We need to play harder; we need to box out harder. We just need to be better.”

The Wolfpack fell to 3-6 in the Suburban East Conference and 6-9 on the season. Woodbury improved to 3-6 in the SEC and 6-10 overall.

Aaron Sandin led Park with 12 points, but he was the only Wolfpack in double figures. Griffin Sell scored 8 points and Carter Coombs had 7.

Cretin-Derham Hall 86, Park 73

Fourth-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall looked the part Tuesday in an 86-73 win over the Park Wolfpack at Cottage Grove.

The Raiders dominated the first half and took a 49-25 lead by intermission. Park won the second half 48-37 but it wasn’t enough to catch the visitors.

Aaron Sandin’s 27 points and Justin Ebber’s 26 led Park, but no other Wolfpack scored in double figures.

Park plays at Roseville (8-5. 4-4) Thursday evening, then hosts Minneapolis Roosevelt (6-9) on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
