Wolfpack opens section with a shutout

Top seeded Park looked the part in a relatively easy 10-0 win in six innings against visiting and eighth-seeded Burnsville in a Class 4A, Section 3 Championship bracket first round game at Charlie Whitbred Field Monday.

Senior catcher Alayna Adamez socked back-to-back home runs to lead the offense, while pitching ace Ava Youngquist and the Park defense did the rest.

“We did start off a little slow but we knew how to really finish the game and put them down there,” said Adamez. “Miss (Kate) Schwarz said it was a really a good thing that we’ve been scoring runs really big against the teams like East Ridge, we beat 10-runned them, Woodbury we 10 runned them, and seeing that we just beat them 10 runs is going to put us in a really good spot and people are really going to be feared of us when we play. That’s the goal, that’s the plan.”

Indeed, it was the ninth-ranked Wolfpack’s 12th win in the last13 games, and the offense has been popping in wins of 15-1, 12-0, 18-3, 13-2, 16-0 and then 10-0 on Monday.

The Wolfpack now host fourth-seeded fifth-seeded Apple Valley (15-6) in the quarterfinals Wednesday at Cottage Grove, starting at 4:30 p.m. Apple Valley breezed past Two Rivers 13-3 in its section opener. The Eagles, much like Park, come in as a hot team, having won 12 of their last 13 games.

Park scored two runs in the second inning against Burnsville on a home run by Adamez, added one more in the third then blew the game open with seven runs in the fifth, all the while holding the Blaze off the bases and off the scoreboard.

Park went to 18-4 with the win on the season. Burnsville slipped to 9-13.

Despite the relative ease of the victory, there’s still room for improvement said Park coaches and players.

“We can’t start slow this time of the year and continue to win as we get deeper in this tournament,” said Park head coach Tony Young. “We have to get ready a lot quicker. I just ... a better approach at the plate no matter who is pitching. And we haven’t played a game since last Wednesday but still, we don’t make it excuses we just have to be better. We won, but we have to be better than that if we want to accomplish our goals.”

On the other side of the bracket Monday second-seeded Eastview edged seven-seeded Eagan by 4-3 score, while third-seeded Rosemount eased past sixth-seeded East Ridge in a 10-3 win. Rosemount (13-8) will play at Eastview (15-6) Wednesday.

Nine of 10 Park batters got hits against the Blaze, led by Adamez who ripped back-to-back home runs and drove in four runs. Sophomore Mackenzie Darsow went 3-for-3 with two doubles and had two RBIs, while Maddie Boothe, Kennedy Brink, Ava Youngquist and Addie Corkish drove in one run each.

As a team Park batted .633 with 16 hits in 27 at bats.

Youngquist stuck out eight, walked only one and allowed just two hits in the pitching victory.

“I think we did a good job with our defense, our defense was really good today,” said Youngquist. “We made the plays that we needed to make and they didn’t get on base view much.

“We can always get better,” Youngquist added. “There’s always more we can do I think. String together more hits would be good. But our defense is really good.”

Win Wednesday and the Wolfpack will play Friday at M-Health Fairview Sports Complex field 10, with the section finals set for Wednesday, May 27.

Burnsville advanced to the first-round by defeating Hastings in the play-in game 14-8.

Three SEC teams are in the top 11 in the latest ranking, Forest Lake is No. 3, Park is No. 9 and Stillwater No. 11.

Park 16, East Ridge 0

Park wrapped up the regular season with an easy 16-0 win at East Ridge Wednesday afternoon.

The No. 12 Wolfpack took no mercy on its two neighbors this week, first beating Woodbury 13-2 on Monday then crushing the Raptors on Wednesday.

With the win, Park tied No. 14 Stillwater for second in the Suburban East Conference this season, both finishing with 12-4 records. No. 3 Forest Lake went undefeated in the league this spring, going 16-0. East Ridge finished sixth in the SEC at 5-10.
