Wolfpack skates past Stillwater, Woodbury

Fans who stepped out for a bathroom break or a quick snack in the middle of the second period missed all the scoring. But it was still a satisfying win for the visiting Park Wolfpack as they skated to a 2-1 victory over the Woodbury Royals Saturday afternoon at M Health Fairview Sports Center.

Scoreless in the first and third, Park pounded in two goals just nine second apart in the second, followed by a Woodbury tally 13 seconds later. And that was it for the scoring, but it was enough to give the Wolfpack their third win in four games.

Sophomore forward Owen Mordorski scored both Park goals, the first at 12:23 of the second and the second on a power play at 12:31. Goalie Henry Voss had a rare assist on the first score, with Gavin Sand getting an assist on the second, just eight seconds later.

“Any win is a good win, that’s for darned sure,” said Park head coach Jeff Corkish. “You take them when you can get them. You know coming in to play Woodbury they’re always very patient and they let you mess up if you’re willing to go too fast and push too hard in the neutral zone. They’re just waiting for those chances, so you just have to be patient with them and with yourselves and take advantage of the turnovers and the loose pucks when they do come. But you have to really slow things down and we’re trying to learn how to be slow at times, have a little bit more of a patient pace and then know when to turn it on when we have to forecheck or if we have to play tight defensively.

“Just trying to change our speeds and that’s tough for kids to get,” Corkish continued. “But they’re getting there. They’re doing a much better job, breaking the puck out and just using each other and bot just throwing pucks and riming pucks and getting them out as quick as they can. We’re trying to teach them how to play just a little bit more as a group together.”

Park improved to 6-7-1 in the Suburban East Conference and 11-10-2 on the season. The Wolfpack are 3-1-1 in their last five games.

The win completed a season sweep of the Royals, both by one goal. Park won the first meeting this season 5-4.

“We played hard till the end,” said Park junior forward Chase Nadler. “We played good defense and like what the goalie said, blocked a lot of shots, played with more fire. I feel we’re playing pretty good, I think we could get better tough. We’re kind of an up and down team but I think we can keep it at the up going into the playoffs.”

Senior goalie Voss and the Park defense had another strong game, Voss stopping 35 of 36 Woodbury shots for a .972 win rate.

“First of all, we worked well as a team,” said Voss. “We stick to our scheme but blocked a slot more shots today, started hitting people and played with fire in our belly today.”

Woodbury fell to 6-16-1 overall and 3-11 in the SEC.

Park wraps up the regular season with a Valentine’s Day game against East Ridge (13-9, 9-4) Saturday at Cottage Grove Ice Arena, starting at 6 p.m. The Raptors won the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season, 5-1.

Park 7, Stillwater 4

Park tied its season high of seven goals, done twice before this season, in a 7-4 Suburban East Conference win at Stillwater Thursday.

Chase Nadler powered in two goals to lead the Wolfpack offense. Kayden Hoberg, Owen Mordorski, Riley Koch, Gavin Sand and Emmett Opichka scored a goal.

Park led 4-2 after one period, 5-2 after two. Stillwater rallied to cut the Wolfpack lead to 5-4 with two goals to open the third period. But Park drilled in two empty net scores in the final minutes to earn the win.

Henry Voss went the distance in goal and had 22 saves out of 26 shots.
