All of a sudden, Park’s offense can’t be stopped.
After slugging through most of the season with an offense that had trouble finding the back of the net, Park’s Wolfpack have now scored 22 goals in three games.
“The last five games we have over 20 goals, before that we had 11 games only six goals,” said Park head coach Andrew Bourgoine. “We definitely figured it out at the right time. They’re playing the ball quicker. The first 11 games we wanted to be selfish. We wanted to dribble through people. And now were using our teammates. We playing like a team. It's because once they know if they play quick, they know they’re going to get the ball right back because they’re moving off the ball.
“We’re beating teams that aren’t getting beat all year by this much,” Bourgoine continued. “Like Forest Lake doesn’t have a great record but they only lost one-zero to Woodbury, they only lost one zero to Irondale. We’re just crushing these teams and it’s a lot of confidence booster. We’re going to be a low seed in sections, but I don’t think anyone is going to want to play us. It’s good to get a big win on senior night as well.”
A 4-2 win at Mounds View, a rousing 8-1 win over Hastings, a tough 4-2 loss at sixth-ranked East Ridge and then another 8-1 win Thursday, this time over visiting Forest Lake in the final game of the regular season.
Chance Vang scored a hat trick with three goals to lead the Wolfpack offense. Sacid Mohamed had two goals, JJ Sanchez and Keanu Lee added one each. Keanu Lee led Park with two assists. Devan Yang, Vang, Mohamed, Tyson Jenkins, Blake Scholl and Avery Sanchez had one assist each.
“I think it was really just working in practice,” said senior midfielder JJ Sanchez when asked what turned it around for the Wolfpack. “If we work hard in practice it’s going to correlate to the game.”
“I feel like we’re more connected and we’re passing the ball around better, and finding options to score,” said senior midfielder Devin Yang. “Our chemistry has been getting better throughout the season.”
“We’ve got our goals and we’re looking for more now,” said Chance Vang. “Keep scoring, keep winning and hopefully win sections.”
“Once we came back from our trip to the Wisconsin Dells and played Stillwater, I felt that game was really big for us and even though the season didn’t turn out like we hoped it would I feel like we really connected as a team after that moment,” said senior defender Decian Randles.
Park improved to 2-5-2 in the Suburban East Conference and 3-8-4 overall. Forest Lake remained winless in the SEC at 0-8 and fell to 3-12 on the season.
The Wolfpack now join section playoffs with games Oct. 13, Thursday for the semifinals and Tuesday for the finals. All games with 7 p.m. starts.
