Wolfpack softball outslugs the Royals

Park went to 4-1 on the young softball season Monday with a chilly but satisfying 12-7 win at Woodbury’s Ojibway Park.

The Wolfpack rapped out 17 hits and led from start to finish. Park grabbed a 4-0 lead after two innings, then led 8-3 after three before Woodbury closed to 10-6 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. But that was as close as the Royals got.

Lauren Osland had two singles and a double and scored twice to lead the Wolfpack offense. Maddie Booth had three singles, Mackenzie Darsow had a double and a single, Addie Corkish, Alayna Adamez and Peyton Moerke had two singles each and Allyson Grobner had a triple.

“I think it was a good team win,” said senior centerfielder Osland. "We hit the ball really well and stole bases well.

Park pitchers Stella Fritsche and Ava Youngquist combined for 10 strikeouts and gave up 10 hits.

“I think it was good that we picked each other up, like one person would not have a good at bat, the next person was ready to go and pick her up,” said Youngquist.

Head coach Tony Young took the team for a long postgame talk after the win.

“Just accepting their roles and understanding them better,” said Young when asked what he wanted to share with the team. “We need to focus on the little things and sometimes that is celebrating a sacrifice, celebrating somebody that moves a runner. It’s little things that is going to make a difference in these games.

The win was a nice bounce-back after a hard 10-2 loss at top-ranked Forest Lake on Friday. Park went to 3-1 in the suburban East Conference, while Woodbury slipped to 2-1.

Monday’s game was also the third time in five games the Wolfpack have scored 12 runs.

Park won twice last week, defeating Roseville 12-2 and Benilde-St, Margaret’s 12-1 in a non-conference matchup before dropping a 10-2 decision at Forest Lake on Friday.

The top-ranked Forest Lake Rangers are off to an impressive start this season with wins over contenders Cretin-Derham Hall (2-0), sixth-ranked Stillwater (4-1), White Bear Lake (5-3) and Park (10-2).

Park hosts sixth-ranked Stillwater (4-1) Wednesday in another key game, plays at Irondale (0-5) Thursday and then goes to East Ridge (3-2) on Monday.
