Boys lacrosse goes 1-1 in SEC play

In a back-and-forth matchup, Park turned it on in the fourth quarter to score an 8-5 win over visiting Mounds View Wednesday.

Park jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one quarter and led 5-1 at the half. But Mounds View rallied with four straight goals to tie the match at 5-all at the end of the third quarter.

“They were coming back, it was really scary,” said Park sophomore Angelo Cullen who led the Wolfpack with three goals. “I was very worried.”

“The third quarter I think we were up 5-1 and kind of just let our guard down a little bit, which we can’t do,” said Park senior attack Jake Westland. “But right after the third quarter happened, we really started to take it serious and get our heads back in the game. We focused on our passing and taking those clean shots right at the net and it just happened to find the net.”

The Wolfpack got goals from Cullen, Westland and Brenden Bloedel in the fourth, while holding Mounds View scoreless, to earn the win.

“We started out strong. We got back on our heels a little bit (in the third quarter), but for the most part I thought it was a pretty decent game,” said Park cocoach Matt Foote. “We kept throwing the ball away on clears, but nothing that we can’t fix.

Park easily won quarters one, two and four. But the third was problematical.

“Back on our heels every time we went to get a clear, we just kind of tossed it around trying to force so it goes right back on defense,” said Foote. “The defense was getting worn down, so we weren’t able to really push out on them. It’s a tale of three quarters, I guess. We finally settled down (in the fourth) and stopped pushing the ball where we didn’t want it to go and we were able to capitalize on some of those shots.”

Cullen led Park in scoring with three goals. Bloedel had two scores, while Aidan Brookins, Carlos LaBrosse and Westland had one each.

Park fell at Cretin-Derham Hall (3-0, 3-1) Friday, losing 6-4. The loss dropped Park to 3-1 in the Suburban East Conference and 3-2 on the season.

Park hosts Roseville (1-2, 2-3) Wednesday, starting at 7 p.m.
