The National Association of Counties (NACo) announced Aug. 1 that Washington County Commissioner Karla Bigham, District 4, has been appointed as the Vice Chair of the Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee’s Law Enforcement Subcommittee.

“It’s an honor to serve as Vice Chair of the Law Enforcement Subcommittee and continue advocating for policies that support safer, more resilient communities,” said Commissioner Bigham. “I look forward to working with my colleagues across the country to address the complex challenges facing our justice and public safety systems.”

The Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee meets throughout the year to discuss and recommend policies on issues of criminal justice, law enforcement, courts, corrections, homeland security, crime prevention, juvenile justice, emergency management, fire prevention, and handling civil disturbances.

NACo President J.D. Clark stated that Commissioner Bigham was chosen because of her dedication to NACo. He mentioned that her active participation and leadership help NACo represent America's counties effectively.

In addition to this leadership role, Commissioner Bigham was also appointed as a member of NACo’s Arts and Culture Innovation Council, Resilient Counties Innovation Council, and Rural Action Caucus (RAC).

NACo is a nonprofit organization that advocates for county interests in federal policy, promotes good county practices, develops leadership skills, shares knowledge, saves resources, and helps the public understand county government.
