Charles Obieze will be the featured speaker and discussion leader at a commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 5-7pm, at Woodridge Park, 9000 90th Street S., in Cottage Grove. The celebration is a collaboration between the local Liberian Men's Association and the Senate District 41 Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party, which held its first Cottage Grove Juneteenth event last year at the same location.
Obieze was born in Bolahun, Lofa County, Liberia, the oldest African republic and a country founded in 1822 as an outpost for freed slaves returning from America. After becoming a U.S. citizen, he and his family have called Cottage Grove home for five years. With an MA in addiction and mental health counseling, his career has focused on healing those, young and old, suffering from substance use disorder and mental health challenges.
"On Juneteenth, we come together as a community of Cottage Grove to celebrate the rich history and culture of African-Americans, and the end of slavery in the United States," said Obieze. As part of his discussion on embracing unity and diversity, Obieze will recognize the work of city leaders and law enforcement professionals. "The Cottage Grove police keep our community safe for everyone, day and night. They are professionals who serve and protect all the residents of our city," Obieze noted.
"We are thrilled to have Charles as a local DFL leader and greatly appreciate his passion for embracing both diversity and unity. His message epitomizes our country's traditional motto of 'e pluribus unum,' meaning 'out of many, one,' " said Senate District 41 DFL Party Chair Eileen Weber. "That recognition of diversity as a unifying strength is what makes our country and our party so great."
As with last year's event, children will make their own Juneteenth jewelry to take home. There will be a light meal and refreshments, including traditional red velvet cake. There is no charge to participate, but all children MUST be accompanied by an adult. Early registration is advised but not required so the necessary amount of food can be planned.
