The Grey Cloud Town Board met for its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at the town hall at 7 p.m. Chief on the night’s agenda was a mining permit variance. The town board opted not to make a recommendation as yet, following presentation by Plan Commission Chair Eduardo Valencia on the Plan Commission’s recommendation.
“We had a special hearing on the 19th,” Valencia said, going into the process. Mining representatives had been present along with members of the public and legal matters were addressed by staff. A hearing was held, with several residents speaking.
From this the Plan Commission opted to recommend denial.
“The permit was not consistent with the approved use,” Valencia said of the reason for the Plan Commission’s refusal.
“Today we had a discussion, can you limit the mining permit? Yes you can,
“The voting I just want to make it clear it was not unanimous,” Valencia went on regarding the recommendation, with Jake Jones abstaining from the vote. After Valencia was done speaking the supervisors had a chance to respond.
Town Board member Phil Dupre asked for more specificity in reporting, with Valencia elaborating three main reasons for the Plan Commission’s recommendation to the Town Board on the mining permit variance:
1) No new evidence,
2) Didn’t seem to conform to the conditional use permit, and
3) The mining company had changed their opinion on the non-conforming piece of the matter.
Dupre spoke after Valencia had given his summary.
“As we’ve been going through tonight with Holcim’s application it’s been brought to our attention that we’ll have more public input with the upcoming meeting for the permit. So the board will not make any recommendations for the upcoming permit at this time.So if you have any further comments or quests you can submit them Feb. 12,” he said.
A meeting Wednesday, Jan. 9 at the town hall for the Larson Quarry EAW saw Washington County set up several large boards showing certain highlights of the EAW. Comments were taken for presentation to Holcim for a response.
The next Grey Cloud Plan Commission meeting is Monday, Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m. The next town board meeting is Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m., with public comment prior at 6 p.m.
