Late rally costs Park at Harding holiday tournament

Host St. Paul Harding turned on the jets when it counted late Thursday afternoon, in a 79-72 Holiday Tournament win over visiting Park.

Park led 38-33 at the half at St. Paul but was outscored by the Knights by a dozen, 46-34, after the break.

The game was tied at 53-all with 9:30 to play and again at 57-all with 7:32 remaining before the Knights went on a surge in the final minutes to take a 69-64 lead. Park pulled to within one at 73-72 with 1:14 left, but that was the last Wolfpack points of the game. The Knights outscored the Wolfpack 6-0 in the final minute and change.

It was a tough loss for the Wolfpack, who slipped to 4-4 on the season. Harding used a pressure full court defense to create turnovers and an effective fast break to create a host of easy baskets, both of which hurt the Wolfpack Thursday.

“Very frustrating,” said Park head coach Mike Weah. “They’re pretty athletic but just stopping the ball -- that takes heart and effort and we didn’t show that tonight.”

Asked the lesson Weah hopes the Wolfpack take away from this game, Weah said; “What it takes – toughness. In a way you’re glad that you get a game like this because you get exposed a little bit and I mean our next game isn’t until next Friday, so toughness is going to be the key. We have practice tomorrow and we have toughness until Friday.”

Tayvion Stewart and Anthony Giadyu each scored 23 points to lead the Wolfpack offensively. AJ Kennedy added 11 and Dom Batts 8.

St. Pul Harding (5-2) had advanced to the championship game with an 85-39 drubbing of St. Agnes in the first round.

Park 78, St. Paul Academy 51

Park seniors Tayvion Stewart and Kaeden Callais each put in 22 points to lead the Park Wolfpack to a 78-51 win over St. Paul Academy Wednesday in the first round of the St. Paul Harding Holiday Tournament.

AJ Kennedy added 15 points for the Wolfpack, who improved to 4-3 on the season.

Park led 38-20 at the half.

Park (2-1, 4-4) hosts East Ridge (2-1, 2-5) Friday, Jan. 5, in a Suburban East Conference game stating at 7 p.m. The Raptors have had Park’s number recently, winning the last four games by an average of 62-43.

This season has been a challenging one so far for the Raptors, who have played a rugged schedule and dropped games to No. 3 Lakeville North, No. 7 Hopkins, Cretin-Derham Hall, Edina and Eden Prairie.
