April is National Volunteer Appreciation month, and with that in view, one South Washington County resident has been nominated for special recognition for helping with math tutoring.
Nominated for her work with Ampact, Charitha Jayasuriya Arachchige works with students from Cottage Grove Elementary, helping them practice and improve their math skills. Tutoring takes place during the school day, where Arachchige has given a total of 4,050 hours in all to help students succeed. Nominating Arachchige is Ampact Program Manager Jessica Herbst.
“As a math tutor, Charitha works one-on-one or in small groups with students who need extra help building their skills,” Herbst said. “With Charitha supplementing the excellent work that teachers are doing in their classrooms, her students have seen wonderful growth. This extra support for students is invaluable within her school’s community. I couldn’t let this month pass without acknowledging Charitha and all she has done to support her students.”
With Reading Corps, Math Corps, Early Learning Corps, and Total Learning Classroom programs, Ampact works to help students master basic skills in reading and math, being open for volunteering to individuals 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent.
Early Learning Corps is targeted at preschool ages 3-5, while Ampact's Reading Corps and Math Corps programs extend from kindergarten to grade 8. Openings exist in both Cottage Grove and Newport for those interested in serving with the program. Readers can find out more at join.readingandmath.org.
