Longtime Newport Fire Chief Steve Wiley is officially retired.
Appointed as Newport Fire Chief on January 1, 2015, Wiley has spent a total of 39 years with the department, moving to Newport in 1981 and joining the fire department five years later.
“I moved to Newport in 1981 and joined the department in 1986,” he said. “My neighbor was on the department and had recruited me for some time.” As for why he joined, Wiley said, “I wanted to give back to the community.”
Wiley stayed on with the Newport Fire department over the years and worked his way up the ranks, being appointed as fire chief in 2015, replacing Matthew Maitland.
As for memories over the years, Wiley noted, “All the friendships I have made over the years, within the department, with our Mutual Aid partners and with the citizens of Newport.”
The City of Newport City recognized the now retired city fire chief with a retirement party including cake, refreshments, and a resolution of appreciation, adopted unanimously on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025. With fire department work behind him, Wiley plans to spend more time with family and friends, as well as traveling. His advice to the next Fire Chief?
