Park powers past Hastings in girls lacrosse

Park senior Shelby Hansen scored seven goals – just one off her personal best – and No. 10 Park rolled into the Section 3 Quarterfinals with a convincing 19-2 girls lacrosse win over visiting Hastings Thursday, June 1.

Hansen added three assists as the Wolfpack advanced in the tournament.

Top-seeded Park was in command the entire match, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first two minutes and leading 13-1 at the half over the eighth-seeded Hastings Raiders.

“I thought our focus was pretty good right off the jump and we held onto that for a while,” said Park head coach Scott Leonard. “Then our focus kind of faded on us a little bit in the first half. But overall I can’t complain. We did what we’re supposed to do. It was a good team win.”

The 13-1 lead matched Park’s season record.

Hastings ended its season with a 6-8 record.

In the other half of the section bracket, second-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall (9-5) overwhelmed Visitation 17-5 and third-seeded East Ridge (10-4) dominated St. Croix Preparatory Academy 16-6.  Park defeated Cretin-Derham Hall 7-5 and East Ridge 5-3 during the regular season.

Hastings had advanced to the game with a 14-8 win over ninth-seeded St. Paul Two Rivers Ducks, but it was clear early on that the Raiders were outmatched in this one.

Park scored early and often against the Raiders. Sophomores Josie Leonard and Madi Brinkman each had three goals and an assist. Megan Husaby scored twice. Kyra Stofer, Sydnee Nelson, Aubree Laska and Chromias Morgan added one goal each.

“We’re just working on getting better right now and always improving,” said sophomore midfielder Josie Leonard. “And we yell at each other a lot but it’s because we want to make each other better. And our defense did do amazing. We’re getting way better at talking and communicating and learning what we do wrong and growing from that.

“And we’re just trying to take this as seriously as we can and taking everything as seriously as we can and trying to make it as far as we can,” Leonard added.

The Wolfpack mixed up the line up after the break, sitting several of the varsity players. Laska, Park’s sophomore starting goalie, got perhaps the biggest cheer of the night for her goal late in the second half.

Laska and freshman Lauryn Ehrenstrom combined to stop 2 of 5 shots in the net.

“I think we passed the ball around in transition, They were really good passes we connected with each other,” said Park junior defender Tori Henderson. “Our defense was really good. And even our floaters that came in, so like a lot of people didn’t play, a lot of varsity players were sitting out, so other people stepped up.”

Park was scheduled to play fifth-seeded Simley (7-7) in the section semifinals Tuesday. The winner of that game advances to the 3A Section finals, set for Thursday, June 8.
