Park softball go 3-0 in SEC openers

Park softball had a big week as the Wolfpack bounced back from an opening-season loss at Eden Prairie with lopsided wins over Woodbury (13-2) East Ridge (12-5) and Cretin-Derham Hal (13-7). The Wolfpack have another big week on deck, including a game at Stillwater Wednesday.

Park 13, Woodbury 2

Edie Walton had the correct answer when asked what kind of pitch she hit for a game-ending grand-slam home run in the bottom of the fifth inning against Woodbury Wednesday.

“A fat one,” said Walton, as the Wolfpack opened the 2023 home softball season with a 13-2 victory over the visiting Royals.

Woodbury opened with a two-run home run in the first inning, but after that the Park pitchers and defense shut out the visitors.

“They hit one out. We hit one out. But we got after it, we got after it,” said Park head coach Bob Loshek. “Park-Woodbury is always a fun little rivalry that’s always been there. What we took away from this one was that we were aggressive. We played good defense; we were aggressive and were playing a little ball now that it's heating up.”

“As we got on I think we were ready to go and we obviously did start slow but then once we got cooking and everyone started doing their job we there was just so much flow.”

Park tied the game at 2-all in the bottom of the first inning, then scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take command of the game.

“We started with a two-run bomb for them and then pl we got down a little but then we came back, we scored two runs and tied it up and from there,” said Park catcher Bryleigh Dana. “From there we made adjustment at the plate. And then I will say pitchers struggled a little bit but back them up, we did our job on defense and they came back, and they did their job, too.”

Park had six players with at least two hits, led by Walton who had two singles and a walk, in addition to her four-run homer. Stella Fritsche had a double and a single. Bri Lee had a double and a walk. Grace Conaway, Noelle Krumrie and Bryleigh Dana had two singles.

Park 12, East Ridge 5

Stella Fritsche picked up her second career pitching win in relief of starting pitcher Skyler Croker, beating the Raptors 12-5 behind the strong hitting of Emma Ambroz and Bryleigh Dana.   Ambroz hit a three-run home run, along with adding a single and double to go three for four and three runs batted in.  Dana was three for four with a double and two runs batted in.   Fritsche who had three strike outs in relief, used an outstanding defense to shut the Raptor hitters down allowing one run over the final four frames.

 Park 13, Cretin-Derham Hall 7

The Park softball team defeated Cretin Derham Hall 13-7 behind another strong pitching performance from Stella Fritsche (3-1).  Fritsche gave up one run on the day as the Wolfpack hitters gave her plenty of room to work with.

Leading the way for Park at the plate were Emma Ambroz and Bryleigh Dana, who both had multiple hits, plus a home run each.  Mackenzie Darsow struck out three batters in relief of Fritsche.
