Tournament play comes to sudden end for St. Paul Park

Seeded second in the tournament, St. Paul Park’s run in the Minnesota sub-state American Legion baseball tournament came to a sudden end Friday afternoon.

St. Paul Park dropped a 7-5 decision to host Eagan Friday afternoon to end its participation in the 2023 Division I 19-under sub-state tournament. The loss left Post 98 with a 1-2 record in the double-elimination tournament, both losses by two runs.

In the tournament opener Wednesday, St. Paul Park blasted seventh-seeded Inver Grove Heights 14-4.

In the second game, however, the second-seeded Post 98 team dropped a 6-4 decision to third-seeded Hastings.

That sent St. Paul Park into the consolation bracket Friday afternoon and a matchup against fifth-seeded and tournament host Eagan at Goat Hill Park. Eagan got the better of that game.

Eagan advanced in the tournament and a game Saturday against top-seeded Lakeville South, losing 11-1.

In the championship round Saturday, third-seeded Hastings edged fourth-seeded West St. Paul 6-4.  West St. Paul then won a 16-15 slugfest over top-seeded Lakeville South in consolation.

In the sub-state championship Sunday, Hastings edged West St, Paul for the second time.
