A Cottage Grove man is facing charges related to an incident that resulted in a school lockdown at Cottage Grove Elementary last week.
Touyer Yang, age 46 of Cottage Grove, was arrested on Tuesday, Feb. 3 after Cottage Grove Police received a call about someone trying to enter Cottage Grove Elementary with a knife, resulting in a school lockdown.
Yang was arrested and booked in the Washington County Jail, with charges against Yang in relation to the incident including Minnesota statutes 609.66.1d(a) Dangerous Weapons on School Property, 609.713.1.1 Terroristic Threats-Reckless Disregard Risk, and 609.595.1(4) Damage to Property - 1st Degree, as well as with two DWI related charges, one for Refusal To Submit to Chemical Test - Breath or Test Refusal Or Failure (169A.20.2.(1) and another for Operate Motor Vehicle Under Influence of Alcohol (169A.20.1(1)).
Cottage Grove Police posted more on what led to the arrest and charges in a Tuesday Facebook post.
“At approximately 11:59 a.m. today, Cottage Grove Police responded to a call at Cottage Grove Elementary of an individual waving a butcher knife.
“While en route, officered learned from dispatch that the individual was potentially intoxicated. A caller had reported that the individual had been driving erratically in the school’s parking lot.
“The individual never went beyond the locked vestibule and responding officers were able to safely apprehend the individual without incident. All students and staff of the school are safe.
“School staff immediately responded by calling 911 and following proper safety procedures by placing the school in a lockdown.
“The individual in custody is a 46-year-old male, a Cottage Grove resident, and is currently being transported to the Washington County Jail pending issuance of a criminal complaint.
“The lockdown at Cottage Grove Elementary has since been lifted.
“With our thanks to Washington County dispatch, to the great work by Cottage Grove Elementary staff, and to our responding officers, this individual was apprehended within six minutes of the initial call.
“We have no further information to provide at this time as this case is still an active investigation.”
