Author Chris Nelson to sign copies of “new” historic Bayport book at the Heritage Center

The Washington County Historical Society is excited to announce that local author Chris Nelson will be signing copies of his new book, “Through the Lens of Walt Serier” at the Washington County Heritage Center on Wednesday, September 28 from 6PM-8PM. The Washington County Heritage Center, located at 1862 South Greeley Street in Stillwater. Copies of the book are available for purchase at the Heritage Center and on wchsmn.org under the “Store” tab.

“Through the Lens of Walt Serier” is a beautiful and expansive collection of photographs taken by Walt Serier, a local Bayport barber. Serier took photographs of Bayport in 1955, 1960 and 1965 to capture the day-to-day activities of the community. These slides seemed to be lost but Bayport native Chris Nelson, known for his lead singing in the group More-Tishans & former owner of Pawnees, tracked them down. With help from many in the community, the people and locations have been identified and they are now all together in one publication.

Nelson found these photographic slides, a total of 660, to be the images of his youth. They are the people, places and events from 1955 through 1965 captured in a moment in time. Also included in the book is a chapter of all known nicknames of Bayport people – some might be missing, but the list is comprehensive. Another chapter relates the early history of Bayport with some historic images from the collections of the Washington County Historical Society.

Nelson loves to chat about all things Bayport history. Come on out to share your stories, your memories, and your nicknames – and pick up a copy or two of the book!
