Boys hockey team rolls to third straight one-goal win

Park saved the best for last Saturday at Forest Lake, scoring two goals in the third period to edge the host Rangers in a 2-1 victory.

It was the third straight one-goal win for the Wolfpack and made it six wins in seven games for a surging Park team.

Park trailed 1-0 for most of the game. But at 3:31 in the third period Jackson Rudh tied it at 1-all with an even strength goal. Eli Daly and Gavin Moss had assists on the play.

Wyatt Beaurline then powered in the game winner on an even strength score at 16:04, with assists to Rudh and Moss.

Park had 26 shots on goal to Forrest Lake’s 18. Sophomore Henry Voss got the start in goal for the Wolfpack and recorded 17 saves to the one goal allowed.

Park moved to 7-3 and third place in the Suburban East Conference, trailing only White Bear Lake (9-1, 12-3-1) and Stillwater (7-1, 7-6-1). The Wolfpack are 10-6 overall. Forest Lake dropped to 2-7-1 and 5-10-1.

Park hosts Stillwater Thursday, Jan. 25, starting at 7:30 p.m., then plays at Mounds View (2-4-2, 4-8-2) on Saturday, Jan. 27 at TCO Sports Garden.

Park skated to its sixth straight win over archrival East Ride Thursday night, but the win came on the heels of some hard news for the Wolfpack.

Missing from the Wolfpack lineup was junior standout Owen Corkish who suffered a broken thumb in the previous day’s practice. Corkish is expected to be out from four to six weeks said his father, Park head coach Jeff Corkish.

After a scoreless first period, Park put in two goals in the second at 10:36 and 6:11 to take control of the game.

“We worked hard, gave it our all,” said Park senior forward Cole Talledge who scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal. “We might have played down to their speed a little bit but that’s about it. We came out hot in the second and buried a couple.”

“Tonight I think we stuck to it. We sometimes came out a little slow and played to their level like Cole said,” senior defender Tommy Lucas agreed. “We just stuck to it and had tenacity. Our captains stood up for us and we kept the lead at all times.

Lucas thought the Wolfpack were a little unfocused to start the game.

“We were kind of too excited,” Lucas said. We beat them four-zero first game and I think we got too comfortable with them. We know they were going to come out hard and we kind of slowed down and made a couple of mistakes but I think we stuck to it in the end.”

East Ridge cut Park’s lead to one in the third period but could come no closer.

It’s been a challenging season for the Raptors, who fell to 0-7-2 in the Suburban East Conference and 2-12-2 overall.

“It’s tough because you’re playing a team that is really well coached and they know exactly what they need to do to stay in the game and shrink the game for themselves,” said Park coach Jeff Corkish. “They know it’s tough to score goals on their side right now and they’re smart enough to know what to do in order to keep the game when they need to be to have a chance and that’s exactly what they did. They gave themselves a chance all game. They mucked up the middle and took away a lot of our lanes and they just played super smart.”

Park, on the other hand, continued its mid-season surge. The Wolfpack are 5-1 in their last six games, including a narrow 3-2 loss to conference-leading White Bear Lake and a rare 3-2 win over Cretin-Derham Hall.
