Friends of Grey Cloud held its first annual meeting Thursday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. Lasting an hour, the online meet via Zoom contained many items.
Chief among them was the need for a few board officers. Specifically, the group is looking for a president, vice president and treasurer.
Sharon O’Boyle volunteered to serve as vice president at the meeting. With few other volunteers, the possibility of holding a special election on the group’s website was also floated. Along with board officers, the group is looking for more core members to help carry the group’s activities forward.
“We know that people support the work that we’re doing, but when the rubber meets the road we need people willing to serve,” group leader Lisa Mueller said of the long term picture.
The group emerged from local opposition to the Mississippi Landing project, now in progress on the riverfront.
Also on the official meeting agenda was the question of showing where fundraising money was spent in regards to the recent legal fight over Mississippi Landing.
“We most definitely will do that,” Mueller said of showing group expenses on the fight for Mississippi Dunes. Details will be posted to the group’s website after the holidays. A generous donor named Ted offered to cover the group’s remaining debt of $291 from the legal fight.
From the past things moved into the present and a review of the Dec. 11 meeting at Grey Cloud Township, held in reference to a proposed expansion of the Larson Quarry. Attendees to the Friends meeting were given a brief review of how things went Dec. 11 by a township meeting attendee. The Larson Quarry pit is seeking to expand to the eastern half of Grey Cloud Township in order to prolong the mine’s life, with materials becoming exhausted at the current site. Expansion would entail either a reroute of County Road 75 or an underpass for the mine to access the eastern part of the island.
With both upper and lower Grey Cloud Island in the balance as to mines, Friends of Grey Cloud is still at work.
