Senior guard Jayden Lane and junior center Pharrel Payne combined for 35 points to lead the way offensively when Park scored a much-needed 48-44 victory Monday evening against visiting Forest Lake.
The win snapped a threegame losing streak by the Wolfpack, who came into the contest on the short end of five of their last six games.
It also got Park off to a solid start as the Wolfpack began the final week of the regular season.
Lane scored 20 points and Payne had 15 to pace Park’s offense. Junior forward Evan Bearth added 10 for the Wolfpack.
Park also swept the Rangers, winning the first meeting this season 53-49. Like the first meeting, this game was close throughout.
“We just played well through pressure,” said Lane. “We didn’t really do that all year but today we finally figured out how to handle the pressure and get the ball up for easy buckets on the fast break.”
Lane said he wasn’t particularly looking for his shot in the late going.
“I was trying to make the pass first if anyone was open, but I was wide open and fortunately it was me,” said Lane.
“We did well handling the pressure definitely,” Payne said. “When they started pressing us at the end we handled the pressure, we got it up, we got it up court, got the fast break and scored.
“It feels great to get a win,” Payne added.
Park evened its season record at 8-8 in the Suburban East Conference. Forest Lake slipped to 9-7, one game ahead of the Wolfpack in the conference standings.
Park led 28-22 at the half but Forest Lake outscored the Wolfpack 13-5 in the first eight minutes of the second half to take a 35-33 lead. Park regained the lead and the momentum, building a 40-36 advantage with seven minutes to play and led the rest of the way.
The Wolfpack played tough defense down the stretch and also were able to handle Forest Lake’s full court pressing defense. Park made some turnovers in the game’s final minutes but nothing that was fatal.
Park led 46-41 when Lane was fouled with 37 seconds left. He made both free throws to give Park a more comfortable 48-41 lead.
On Friday night, Park dropped a 68-53 decision to league-leading Mounds View, the Wolfpack’s third straight loss.
Payne scored 15 points to lead Park. Brady Perryman and Jack Blumberg had nine each.
Mounds View (14-2) stands atop the Suburban East Conference with a week to go in the regular season, a game ahead of Woodbury (13-3) in the standings.
Park hosts Cretin-Derham Hall (11-5) Wednesday, March 10, then wraps up the regular season with a game at Irondale (1-15) Friday, March 12.
