Park girls win hockey thriller over East Ridge

Park standout senior Maggie Jensen got some extra ice time Saturday night. TV time no less.

And why not. Jensen earned herself a TV interview after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime as Park skated by archrival East Ridge 4-3 in girls' hockey on the Raptors’ home ice, the M Health Fairview Sports Center.

It was a dramatic finish to a wild and woolly affair that saw three ties before the Wolfpack pulled off the win 6:57 into the extra period. Park led 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 but each time the Raptors came up with an equalizer.

That is until the end.

“Super exciting, it was back and forth all game so getting that overtime win against our rival is really exciting,” said Jensen. “I just kind of came around the net and backhanded it and it went in. I had no idea it even went in, but, yea, it was super exciting.”

Freshman Stella Daly got the Wolfpack on the scoreboard first with an unassisted even strength goal in the first period. Another freshman, Nora Thurmes, made it a 2-1 Park lead in the second, with an assist by Natalie Post. Then in the waning minutes of the second, Park took a 3-2 lead on a score by junior forward Lauren Osland, with an assist by Jensen.

But East Ridge took advantage of a late penalty and tied the game at 3-all at 9:52 in the third period on a penalty shot goal and from there the game went into overtime.

“We moved the puck a little bit, we forechecked and then in overtime we got the puck in the net once,” said Park head coach Bay Shock. “That’s the key in overtime, just put it on net and see what happens. You just make the goalie handle the puck and you know there wasn’t much going on in that play. It just went to the corner and she dragged it out and we finally got a win.”

“He said just get the puck on net,” Jensen agreed.

The overtime win snapped Park’s five-game losing streak in which the team managed just six goals.

Park sophomore goalie Alayna Adamez stopped 19 of 22 shots by the Raptors. Park outshot East Ridge 36-22.

Park improved to 3-10 in the Suburban East Conference and 8-13 on the season. Eats Ridge slipped to 2-12 in the conference and 6-16 overall.

“We haven’t won in overtime yet this year,” said ninth grade forward Addie Corkish. “I think we worked really well as a team tonight. Our passing was a lot better tonight, we got shots on the net.

The Wolfpack hosts St. Paul/Two Rivers Friday, Jan. 26 at Cottage Grove Ice Arena, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Stillwater 6, Park 0

Park’s mid-season scoring slump continued Tuesday in a 6-0 loss to visiting Stillwater at Cottage Grove Ice Arena.

It was Park’s second straight shutout, following a 7-0 loss to Woodbury on Jan. 13. The Wolfpack have managed just five goals in four games since a 5-2 win over Bloomington Jefferson back on Dec. 30. Stillwater outshot Park 33-14 on Tuesday.

Forest Lake 3, Park 1

Park’s scoring woes continued Thursday in a 3-1 road loss at the Forest Lake Sports Center.

The Wolfpack managed just a single goal; a first period shot by Maggie Jensen. Alaina Post and Tori Stepka assisted on the score.

But that was it for the Wolfpack as the Rangers tied the game in the second period and then won it with a 2-0 run in the third.

Park outshot Forest Lake 39-27.
