Park volleyball team goes to 11-5

Park dominated the action in a 3-1 win over visiting Two Rivers in a non-conference contest at Cottage Grove Monday. The Wolfpack won 25-12, 25-13, 2325 and 26-11.

The Wolfpack did just about everything well Monday – front line hitting, passing, setting, serving playing defense and just all-around hustling. If one of the Wolfpack wasn’t making a great hit they were liking making a great hustle or great pass.

“We played complete volleyball,” said Park head coach Amy Johnson. “We had great back row play, we had great front row play, our hitters were hitting well, our servers were serving well, our blockers were getting hands on the ball. It was a complete game.

“We are a very, very tough team to beat when we can put it all together,” Johnson continued.

Park improved to 11-5 on the season and stand 2-2 in Suburban East Conference play.

“I think our whole inside team played really good, like together and not as individuals,” said sophomore outside hitter Sonja Lind. “And we all came to win. Our offense was really playing well together.”

Two Rivers, 7-10, denied the Wolfpack a sweep in an inspired third game, but generally were overmatched against the Wolfpack.

Park was swept in three games for the first time this season in three close contests at Roseville Wednesday, losing 29-27, 25-23, 25-17.

Park fell to 2-2 in the Suburban East Conference and 10-4 on the season. Roseville improved to 2-2 and 12-4.

Park plays at Cretin-Derham Hall (0-4, 4-13) Thursday, Oct. 6, in a game starting at 7 p.m.

The Wolfpack then have a brutal closing schedule, meeting top three conference teams Stillwater (103, 4-0), Irondale (12-5, 3-1) and league-leading East Ridge (12-5, 4-0) in their last three conference contests.

The key for the Wolfpack coming down the stretch of the season is being tough mentally, said Johnson.

“Mentally,” said Johnson. “We talk about it right now, for us, it’s 75 percent mental because we’ve got the physical. One hundred percent got the physical. We’ve got to make sure we’re always showing up for that 75 percent mental part of the game.”

If there’s an Achilles’ heel for the Wolfpack, it might remain serving.

“I think we kind of have to work on our serving honestly,” said sophomore middle/outside hitter Carly Slusser. “I think its really inconsistent some games it will be really good and other games it will be a little inconsistent. I think every other spot on the floor was doing their job.”
