Park wrestlers sweep a trio at Woodbury

At the Woodbury quad Thursday, Park edged the host Woodbury Royals 40-39, dominated East Ridge 63-11 and topped Eagan 41-33.

On Saturday, however, a short-handed Park team came up short in the Park Wolfpack duals Saturday, winning some battles but ultimately losing three of its four dual battles.

In dual meets, Park lost to Anoka 51-28, to River Falls 28-29, fell to Mahtomedi 36-30 and the topped Spectrum 54-30 for seventh place.

“Tough day as a team,” said Park head coach Jim LaBrosse. “We were a little short today without 106, 113 and no 145 today. And our 215 Taran (Blasy) is gone as well today so we’re a little limited starting.

“We finished strong against Spectrum but we scored 28 points against Anoka and they ended up winning today,” LaBrosse said. “So, I thought we wrestled well individually but team-wise we need to shore some things up and get some guys healthy and get some kids back. We’ve wrestled a lot of matches in a short amount of time so we’re going to gear up, no individual team matches this week we’re just going to go to an individual tournament next Friday.”

Gunner Mullen at 145 and Zach Carr at 120 went undefeated on the day to pace Park.

“Lance Frandup filled in today at 120 and did an excellent job,” LaBrosse said. “Alex Carr has been doing really well but lost one today in overtime and Doug Sabin wrestled really well at heavyweight.”

In the close match against Mahtomedi, for example, Park forfeited at 106, 113, 145. Mahtomedi, was also shorthanded, however, forfeiting at 106, 113, 160 and 195.

Anoka swept the first three rounds then topped Cambridge-Isanti 34-30 for the team title. Alexandria edged River Falls 39-38 for third and St. Thomas academy topped Mahtomedi 45-31 for fifth.
