Quick police work and due diligence on the part of law enforcement brought in a suspect last week within less than 24 hours, after a Speedway gas station located at 1624 Hastings Avenue in Newport found itself the victim of a robbery.
The suspect, who was brought in after police followup on canvassing the area and review of surveillance footage, is thought to have been behind two other robberies in addition to the Newport Speedway, with two robberies producing a gun and one implying the same. Brought to the Washington County Jail at Stillwater upon arrest, he reportedly didn’t have time to change out of the clothes worn on surveillance footage of the robbery at the Newport Speedway.
“Thanks to the outstanding police work and collaboration from our deputies, detectives, & public safety workers, a suspect is behind bars tonight,” the Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported January 13..
Depending on the degree (first or second), aggravated robbery as outlined in chapter 609.245 of the Minnesota Statutes can carry between 15 to 20 years in prison, or else a 30,000 to $35,000 fine, with prison time plus a fine, for the same crime, also a possibility.
