Thursday afternoon at St. Michael Albertville High School, the Minnesota State Wrestling Individual Tournament took place. The tournament consisted of an eight-wrestler bracket at each weight class. The Wolfpack’s Zach Silvis competed at the 120-weight class after he won the Super Sectional tournament to qualify. Silvis has had an excellent junior season, entering the tournament with a 30-2 record earning him the 4th seed for the State Tournament.
In his first match of the day, Silvis faced Spencer Johnson, a junior of Sartell who was the 5th seed. Silvis won the match by a 9-3 score to advance to the winner’s bracket. The win guaranteed Silvis would finish in at least 4th place.
In his second match of the day, Silvis wrestled top seeded Jore Volk, a junior of Lakeville North. Volk had a 32-1 record on the season after his first-round victory. Volk won his first match by technical fall 23-8 at 3:55 of the match. In this match Volk was forced to wrestle the distance, as Silvis would not back down. In the end Volk won the match by major decision, 18-5. Volk would win the State Title later in the evening.
Silvis then wrestled in the 3rd match against Edina’s Landen Nebel. Nebel, a sophomore, was seeded 6th in the tournament. Silvis would prevail in a low scoring battle, 5-2. The win gave Silvis 3rd place and a 32-3 record for the season.
Silvis competed well, wrestling hard and with class. Very few ever make it to a State Tournament, he should be very proud of his accomplishment and his great individual and team season.
