Putting the politics of the trial aside, we must remember, the folks on the ground providing security during the area’s most tense trial in recent memory are human. The members of the Minnesota National Guard have been put into situations that require patience and sacrifice. They have been spat on and yelled at, they have had objects thrown at them and some have been shot at, all for trying to do their job of ensuring a safe environment for everyone to peacefully protest and to allow our justice system to do its job.

Again, these people are humans. They are our brothers and sisters, our fathers and mothers, our sons and daughters, our neighbors, and our friends. People that swore an oath to protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States of America. They provided safety for all during the trial and even though they are no longer on the streets, many are still deployed around the cities to be available at a moments notice. This is why Colleen Scheler of the American Legion post 98 stepped up to organize a food drive for the soldiers.

Scheler is the manager of the American Legion post, a location that has been a central hub for helping the area out with food distributions in conjunction with the Local 120. This time, she asked the Local 120 to provide transportation of items they collected to the Nation Guard stationed around the Twin Cities.

“Colleen knew the Teamsters are all about Transportation, that’s how she ended up contacting us,” said Paul Slattery, Organizer/Political Director with the Teamsters Local 120. “All the credit really needs to go to her.”

Scheler utilized social media to spread the word. Her post gave a list of suggested items.
