The St. Paul Park Newport Lions Club made several new donations and heard updates at its November meeting.
Held Nov. 12 at Legion Post 98 in St. Paul Park, the November Lions meeting saw donations to the Miracle League, the Park High School Youth in Government program, and recognition of a new SaveStation AED unit at the Lions shack, as well as approval of two $500 donations, one to the Minnesota Children’s Hospital Cancer Fund and the other towards development of the Shephard’s Farm Horse Program.
As for the Miracle League, the St. Paul Park Newport Lions presented them with a $1,500 donation. Hosted locally by the City of Woodbury at the Miracle League field at East Ridge High School, the East Metro Miracle League seeks to provide adaptive recreation programs for individuals with cognitive and/or physical disabilities.
Also at the meeting, the Park High School Youth in Government program received $1,100 from the Lions, with members of the program updating the Lions on their activities.
More specifically, the teacher advisor to the club and a club student each described how their team learns about governmental operations on both a local and global scale by performing mock Bill sessions at the State Capitol each year. This experiential learning program allows students to assume the State Capitol chambers for a day to present and hear bills and ultimately vote.
Last but not least, the Lions also applauded installation of a SaveStation AED unit at the Lions shack, achieved as part of a collaboration between the Lions, Teddy's Heart Foundation and Park Grove Electric. The project took several months to accomplish with nearly $10,000 donated towards this lifesaving program.
Each SaveStation houses an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that is publicly accessible 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The installation on the Lions shack on Broadway Avenue represents the first unit in St Paul Park and is being donated to the City of St Paul Park.
Lions Club business meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month.
