Eager young tennis players got a crash course in lots of the basics as the annual Cottage Grove youth tennis camp wrapped up last week.
Players from novices to more experienced learned tennis skills, rules and strategies from camp director Tony Townsend and staff from the Park High School tennis teams.
“We always talk about three goals,” said Park High School tennis coach Townsend. “No. 1 is just to have fun. No. 2 is to make some new friends and the big thing is just to improve as a tennis player. So, if you come in very new to the game of tennis, we just want to make sure you leave feeling more confident about your tennis skills.”
Players were grouped in three age divisions: 5–8-year-olds, 9- and 10-year-olds and 11- to 17-year-olds.
“Each stage has a different setup, different court size, different type of tennis ball just to allow them to have more success,” Townsend said.
Because the Park High School tennis courts were recently resurfaced, the sessions were held at the East Ridge High School tennis courts.
