The Wolfpack hosts compiled a 3-1 record in their own volleyball invitational tournament Saturday, going to 14-3 on the season.
Park topped St. Paul Highland Park (25-20, 25-15), Faribault (25-10, 25-13), lost to a strong Anoka team in three close matches (20-25, 25-18 and 12-15), then defeated South St. Paul (25-18, 25-15) in the tournament.
Anoka (14-3 overall) rolled to the tournament title with wins over Visitation, St. Agnes, Park and South St. Paul.
Park 3, Woodbury 0
Park bounced back from a tough conference loss at sixth-ranked and league-leading East Ridge Monday with a relatively easy win over South Washington County rival Woodbury, sweeping the Royals in three.
Park won 25-18, 25-11 and 25-18 to climb to 3-1 in the Suburban East Conference and 11-2 on the season.
“They played very well,” Said Park head coach Amy Johnson. “We passed better (than on Monday against East Ridge). “We played better defense, bottom line. We just – I don’t know what happened on Monday but our passing and defense kind of left us. And so we talked about the importance of those two things, every day in practice we’ve said we’ve got to after it and make sure on Wednesday we clean that up.”
Woodbury slipped to 1-3 in the SEC and 3-9-2 overall.
“East Ridge is a bad rival and Woodbury is too so beating Woodbury after losing to East Ridge was definitely exciting for us,” said Park senior hitter Rainna Jameson.
“Teamwork, our confidence,” Jameson said when asked what the Wolfpack did well against Woodbury. “We all really worked together. No one really got in their head when they made mistakes.”
Park doesn’t need to refine their skill set, Jameson noted, talking about the loss to the Raptors.
“Honestly I feel like our skills are all there,” Jameson said. “I think match-to-match we’re both really good teams and we’re kind of equal. But for us it’s our mentality and I think if we really get in a zone and really believe in ourselves, which we say we do but we’re not really executing it right now. I think with our mentality and changing that we can definitely have a really good match with them.”
Also asked what the Wolfpack needs to do to stick with East Ridge in a possible future matchup, senior Jazzlyn Collier said, “I think definitely communication and just working hard, like persevering even when its hard and giving our all, which is something we’re totally capable of.”
Park hosts Mounds View (3-1, 9-4) Thursday, starting at 7 p.m., then plays at Cretin-Derham Hall (1-3, 11-7) on Tuesday as the conference season winds down.
