Wolfpack boys hockey team sweeps trio

Jackson Rudh scored the winning goal in overtime as the Wolfpack edged host Woodbury 2-1 in a Suburban East Conference contest Saturday at M Health Fairview Sports Center.

It was Rudh’s 20th goal of the season. He leads Park in goals, assists (27), points (47) and shots on goal (20).

With the win, Park went to 3-5 in the SEC and 14-7 on the season. Park’s 14 wins – with four regular season games yet to be played are the most since at least the 2008-09 season.

After a scoreless first period, Park took a 1-0 lead in the second on an even strength goal by Gavin Moss at the 4:04 mark. Owen Corkish and Brendan Bloedel had assists on the tally.

Woodbury tied it up four minutes later a goal by Tommy Dittrich.

The two teams then skated through another scoreless period in the third to send the game into overtime. That set the stage of Rudh’s game-winning goal.

Next up for the Wolfpack (4-5, 14-7) is a game against rival East Ridge (4-4, 9-7-1) at Cottage Grove Ice Arena, starting Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Park 7, Eagan 4

Park powered in four goals in four minutes to blitz visiting Eagan 7-4 in a non-conference boys hockey Thursday.

Still, Park head coach Jay Moser wasn’t overly pleased with the way the third period went for the Wolfpack.

“We played two good periods and then we wanted it to be easy that third period,” said Park head coach Jay Moser. “We wanted the other team to fold and they didn’t and we didn’t work hard enough for me to be happy. We have to learn how to play three periods.”

Jackson Rudh scored a hat trick, the last one an empty netter, to lead the Wolfpack offense. Gavin Moss had back-to-back scores in the second period. Owen Corkish and Tyler Schwartz had Park’s other goals.

Park took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Rudh. But the game was knotted at 2-2 midway through the second period when Park went on an offensive tear. Schwartz got the puck rolling by scoring at the 12:53 mark to give Park a 3-2 lead. Then Moss powered in back-to-back scores in 10 seconds for a 5-2 lead. Rudh added his second goal a minute and a half later and just like that Park held a 6-2 lead entering the third.

“That’s what we needed,” said Moser of the second period offensive splurge by the Wolfpack. “We need to score goals because we have a tendency to give up too many. We struggled to get ‘em by in that first period and the floodgates kind of opened for us in the second and it was big. We needed some good things to have after the last couple of weeks.”

The third wasn’t a memorable period for the Wolfpack, but there was one shining moment. Park’s best defense of the night probably came in the third when the Wolfpack held the Wildcats scoreless despite being down two players on penalties.

“We just didn’t finish in that third period,” said sophomore forward Max Kaplan. “We came out flying first and second … We were buzzing (in the second) but we just couldn’t finish it in the third. Our power play was going hard (Park was 2 for 4), we got a couple big goals in the second period and that really helped.”

Alex Harden went the distance in goal, stopping 22 of 26 shots for an .846 percentage.

“We did well in the power play,” said Eli Daly, another of Park’s sophomore forwards. “Our defense needs some work. We can’t let guys sneak up behind us and get breakaways. That’s the big thing. Got to forecheck harder, stop on pucks. I think we’ve got a lot to build off of. There’s definitely some important pieces that we could improve on, like defensive zone and just the little things like stop on pucks.”

Park 5, Apple Valley 2

Gavin Moss powered in two goals and the Park Wolfpack skated past host Apple Valley 5-2 Tuesday in a non-conference contest.

The win snapped a threegame losing streak for the Wolfpack.

The game was tied 1-1 after one period. Park led 2-1 after two, then outscored the hosts 2-0 in the third to take the victory. Brayden Leazott put the game on ice with an empty net goal at the 16:09 mark.

Moss had goals in the first and third to lead Park. Also scoring were Tyler Schwartz, Jackson Rudh and Leazott. Rudh and Schwartz also had two assists each. Others with assists were Brendan Bloedel and Owen Corkish.

Park outshot Apple Valley 33-19.

Goalie Aiden Miller stopped 19 of 21 shots for the Wolfpack.
