Explore the Mississippi River with a weekend of outdoor enjoyment. Join a park ranger on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Levee Park in Hastings for Bike with a Ranger.

Bike with a Ranger is a way to explore the Mississippi River and Hastings’ trails along the 10-mile loop, starting and ending in Levee Park. Led by a park ranger, participants will learn about the region’s history and wildlife from points easily accessible by bicycle.

This event is free to the public and runs from 9-11 a.m. All participants are asked to bring their own bicycle, helmet, and water. It is also suggested to bring sunscreen and sunglasses. There are free public parking lots near Levee Park, at 20 Ramsey St. This event is recommended for teens and adults.

On Sunday. Sept. 17, don’t miss out on Paddle with a Ranger at Vermillion River Bottoms in Hastings. This guided paddle will take you through a unique portion of this national park that’s reminiscent of a Louisiana bayou. This area of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area is great for wildlife observations, including bald eagles and great blue herons.

The program runs from 10 a.m. to noon but it is suggested to arrive 15-20 minutes prior to the start time to ensure parking and time for a brief a safety talk. The program starts promptly at 10 a.m.

Canoes, kayaks, paddles, and lifejackets will be provided by the National Park Service and Mississippi River Paddle Share.

All participants must be 18+ and able to maneuver a kayak on the Mississippi River. A person under 18 years old may attend if they are in a tandem kayak with an adult from the same household. It is recommended that participants have at least some paddling experiences prior to this event.

Please note when ordering tickets: double (tandem) kayaks are for two people from the same household. Tickets are $35 per participant and are available for purchase at parkconnection.org.
