The Wolfpack girls were sailing along, trailing just 2-1 late in the third period when the bottom fell out of the boat Saturday afternoon at the Apple Valley Sports Arena.
Host Apple Valley scored three goals in the final 4:37 to turn what had been a competitive hockey game into a rout.
Final score, Apple Valley 5, Park 1.
The Eagles improved to 4-1 overall, while Park dropped to 3-2 on the season.
"We’ll we took the first period off, two shots in the whole period,” said Park head coach Bay Shock. “You’ve got to play. You can’t – we don’t score enough goals just to show up five minutes here and five minutes there. And then you have a letdown and boom, boom, boom.
“You know 5-1 wasn’t indicative of the score but that’s what it ended up,” Shock continued. “They’re working hard and they’ve pressing and then they get scored upon and it becomes a mindset of ‘of man, I gave up a goal,’ and that’s contagious sometimes. … This was a big game, this was a section opponent that was the No. 1 team in the section last year and so, we weren’t ready.”
Apple Valley led 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 after the second.
Park got its only score of the game on a power play goal by senior forward Maggie Jensen at the 12-minute mark of the second period to tie the game at 1-all. Lauren Osland and Sam Miller earned assists on the play.
Apple Valley took a 2-1 lead two and a half minutes later and that’s where the game stood until the late surge by the Eagles, who outshot the Wolfpack 28-19 overall.
It was the second straight loss for the Wolfpack after starting the season 3-0.
Roseville/Mahtomedi stopped Park’s season-opening winning streak at three in a 6-1 girls hockey win Tuesday at Roseville Ice Arena.
The Wolfpack couldn’t match Roseville/Mahtomedi’s offense. The hosts led 2-0 after one period and 3-1 after two.
Park’s only goal came in the second period on an even strength shot by Natalie Post. Addie Corkish gained the assist.
Park outshot the hosts 31-17 but only once found the back of the net.
The Wolfpack continues their road-heavy schedule Thursday with a game against North/Tartan (1-3) at Tartan Arena, starting at 7 p.m. Park plays at Stillwater Saturday evening. The Stillwater game is the last of eight straight season-opening road games for the Wolfpack.
