Dating to the late 20th century as part of an environmental settlement with Ashland Petroleum, the Grey Cloud Dunes SNA saw locomotive action this past week, the foreground area on the left comprising a former dump site for Ashland, become a haven for wildlife and marked “outstanding” as to its biodiversity. Currently tinder-dry from lack of snow, spring rains are expected to help address the moisture problem and make the prairie bloom, just when being anyone’s guess.
