Washington County Sheriff Dan Starry has opted not to seek a third term as Washington County Sheriff. Appointed as Sheriff in 2017 before winning election to the post in 2018 and 2022, Starry released the following statement in relation to his decision:
“After thorough consideration, I have decided that I will not seek a third term as Washington County Sheriff in the fall of 2026. I am grateful for the opportunity that the citizens of Washington County have afforded me. I look forward to completing my term ending in January 2027.
“It has been a true privilege and honor to be able to work with the finest in law enforcement since my journey began as a deputy in 1993 for the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Serving as Sheriff since 2017, following in the footsteps of remarkable leaders, has been an extraordinary honor that I will always cherish. Serving you has been an honor and a privilege—thank you!
“The unwavering support from residents, business leaders, and elected officials in Washington County has been a cornerstone for our law enforcement community. This support has fueled our determination and dedication ensuring the safety of everyone who lives, works, or visits here. Our success is because of our committed professionals at the Washington County Sheriff's Office, who provide exemplary service every day of the year.
“Washington County continues to be safe and thriving due to the exceptional quality of our law enforcement and first responders. The collaboration among the county's nine law enforcement partners is truly unparalleled and a source of immense pride. I will deeply miss the strong relationships and engaging conversations with the remarkable leaders within the county.
“Looking ahead, I plan on spending more time with my wife and children, as we travel and explore the country, while enjoying our grandchildren as they make their own mark in this incredible world.
“I take great pride in the achievements we've accomplished together at the office. Thank you for the continued support of our incredible team here at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.”
With the next election for Sheriff in 2026, Jeremy Bolen of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department and Stillwater Police Chief Brian Mueller have expressed interest in running for the position.
