Kennedy’s 27 leads Wolfpack at Stillwater

Posted

Senior AJ Kennedy dropped in a season-high 27 points and after starting the season 0-2, Park easily won at Stillwater Friday in Suburban East Conference boys' basketball to even its season record at 2-2.

Park scored a convincing 69-50 victory over the host Ponies.

Park built a 43-25 halftime lead and cruised home with the road win.

Tayvion Stewart and Anthony Giadyu each scored a dozen points for the Wolfpack. Max Wilkerson added 11.

Park 90, Hastings 89

Turnabout was fair play for the Park Wolfpack at Hastings Thursday in a non-conference boys basketball tilt.

The Wolfpack, who lost their season opener by one in double overtime at South St. Paul, took a 90-89 thriller at Hastings for the team’s first win of the season. The teams were tied at 40-all to start the second half.

Tayvion Stewart scored 23 points to lead the Wolfpack. Dom Batts added 16, while AJ Kennedy and Anthony Giadyu scored 14 each.

Cretin-Derham Hall 81, Park 66

Visiting foe and frequent Suburban East Conference bitter rival Cretin-Derham Hall showed the Wolfpack how it’s done Tuesday.

Cretin (1-1) jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first half and more or less kept it there most of the game in an 81-66 win over the host Wolfpack.

Neither team opened the season with a win. Park opened the season with a tough 77-76 loss in double overtime at South St. Paul. Cretin fell 74-65 to Farmington in the Hopkins Tip-Of Classic. The two schools split last year’s series, each winning on their home floor.

The Raiders led 38-28 at the break, then outscored Park by 5 points in the second half. The Wolfpack cut Cretin’s lead to single digits a few times in the second half but could never make up the early deficit.

“It’s one of those ones where you don’t say much,” said head coach Mike Leah when asked after the game what he planned to tell his team. “You just think about it tonight, watch film, you obviously know you got outworked but why did you get outworked so watch film and then talk about it tomorrow.

“It’s early in the season,” Leah added. “We talked about it coming into the game. We feel we can guard, we can definitely play D, but our toughness was questioned tonight. Our heart was questioned tonight. Now we see what are things that can get us dominated in a basketball game. They showed it tonight, Cretin showed it tonight with outrebounding us the way they did.”

Anthony Giadyu scored 23 points and Tayvion Stewart had 22 to lead Park. No one else for the Wolfpack was in double figures.

Park (1-1, 2-2) hosts traditional powerhouse and current top-ranked Park Center (6-0) Thursday, Dec. 21, in a non-conference contest with a 7:30 p.m. start. The Pirates have played for the Class 4A title the past two season, winning it all in 2022 and finishing second last season. Park Center currently has three of the top players in the state on its roster in 6-4 senior guards Casmir Chavis and Jackson Fowlkes and 6-9 senior forward Chiang Ring.
