As spring nears, join Carpenter Nature Center (CNC) staff in the process of maple syruping. The two syruping events will take place on March 5 and March 19 from 1-3 p.m. at the center’s Minnesota Campus, located at 12805 Saint Croix Trail South in Hastings.
According to CNC’s Education Director Sarah Germscheid, “Guests will hike to the ‘sugarbush’ to learn about the structure and function of trees, tap maple trees, watch the process of turning sap into syrup, and sample the final product. The program starts indoors but be ready for spring snow and mud outdoors.”
Maple syruping is the process of boiling sap to create syrup. It can take over 10 hours of evaporating water from maple sap with an additional one to two hours for refinement on the stove to create maple syrup.
Germscheid added, “Factors like initial sap sugar content and fire/heat consistency during cooking can influence the time it takes to create the finished product. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup.”
A small portion of the maple syrup tapped from the sugarbush at CNC’s MN Campus is also available for purchase in the Apple Shack in the fall and at the Carpenter Nature Center Visitor Center.
Registration is required and can be made by calling 651-437-4359. The cost is $8 per person / $5 for “Friends of CNC.”
