Dance team kicks to high score

Park head coach Rachel Reinert understandably couldn’t help letting out a little squeal as she saw the final high kick results Friday evening.

And why not. It was a record setting day for the Wolfpack dance team. Park kicked its way to a season high score as the Wolfpack dancers hosted an eight-team Suburban East Conference meet Friday.

“We had a goal we set for ourselves, we wanted to hit 250 on our score sheet and we hit a 252,” said Reinert. I think they really worked on the corrections that we gave them throughout the week, they kicked high, they kicked strong and they were nice and clean in their chorography.

“I think there were some timing issues that I would like to see worked out before next Saturday’ conference finals but we have some changes in the choreography coming next week,” Reinert added. “It’s always evolving. I’m very happy with it (tonight’s performance).

Park was awarded a score of 252 in high kick, its top score of the season. The Wolfpack also moved up to a fifth-place finish in the high kick category with 16 points.

“I think as a whole team we kicked really high for our high kick, said co-captain Josephine Vang. “For our turns everyone used their abs and they turned really good from my perspective. I think that all the girls as one, we all danced as one.”

It was an improvement of several points from what the kick team did in a meet at Woodbury a week previously on Dec. 2.

Forest Lake won the high kick event with four points, followed by: Mounds View, 7; Roseville, 8; Cretin -Derham Hall, 13; Park, 16; Stillwater, 19; Woodbury, 19; and Irondale, 24.

Asked what the team needs to do to keep improving, Chloe Thao, also a dance team captain, said: “I think really just keeping that positive mind set. But I think as a team we lift each other up and I think that we can also just really trying to be ourselves out on the floor and out it all out there.”

The Wolfpack placed seventh in the jazz event with 20 points.

“We did our jazz changes this week so still some things to fine tune and fix there,” Reinert said. “But kick is looking good so we’re ready to keep moving.”

Mounds View edged Forest Lake to take the jazz title, both teams finishing with 5 points. Roseville was third with 10 points, followed by Cretin-Derham Hall, 11; Woodbury, 15; Stillwater, 19; Park, 20; and Irondale, 24.
