HASTINGS – On February 19, Hastings Bus Company and Big River Bus Company will celebrate School Bus Employee Appreciation Day, a time to recognize the dedicated drivers and aides who ensure the safe transportation of students every day for Hastings and Cottage Grove. The event will bring together local dignitaries, school officials, and community members to honor these hardworking individuals who play a vital role in the daily lives of families across the area.
The celebration kicks off early in the morning at 6 a.m. with breakfast items such as rolls and juice for employees, followed by a lunch featuring chili dogs. Among those invited to attend are school principals, the mayor, the superintendent, and other officials who wish to show their gratitude for the transportation staff.
“It takes an entire team to make this work,” said Terry Johnson of Hastings Bus Company. “We have around 93 people between drivers and aides making sure that every student gets to and from school safely each day. And that’s just in Hastings. When you include mechanics, dispatchers, trainers, and HR personnel, it’s a massive operation that keeps everything running smoothly.”
Big River Bus Company serves the South Washington County Area for special education students, and they have similar numbers to Hastings for drivers and aides.
Pat Regan, the owner of the company, highlighted the impact of school bus employees beyond just transportation.
“The relationship aspect of this job is huge. Many drivers and aides get to know the students and their families personally. They know which family member is picking up a child on which day, and they become a trusted part of the students’ daily routine,” Regan said.
The appreciation extends beyond the bus drivers to the essential bus aides, who play a crucial role in assisting students, particularly those in special education. The demand for special education transportation has increased significantly over the years, reflecting the need for compassionate and skilled individuals who can cater to students with unique needs.
Both local companies are encouraging the communities they serve to participate in the celebration by sending thank-you notes, cards, or letters of appreciation for the drivers and aides who make a difference every day. Families and students who wish to express their gratitude can send their messages directly to the bus company.
Additionally, the Hastings and Cottage Grove Journal will be publishing a special feature following the appreciation day, showcasing some of the heartfelt messages from the community.
“If you have a story about how a driver or aide has positively impacted your family, we want to hear it,” said Johnson. “These employees work tirelessly, and we want them to know just how valued they are.”
The Hastings Bus Company and Big River Bus Company are key parts of a larger transportation network, employing over 1,400 drivers across various locations, including Farmington, Duluth, Fergus Falls, Rochester, La Crosse, and several others. Their dedication ensures that thousands of students arrive safely at school and back home each day.
To participate in showing appreciation, families can send their messages directly to Hastings Bus Company at 425 E. 31st St. Hastings, MN 55033. Let’s come together as a community to celebrate and recognize these unsung heroes on February 19!
